I have the honour to acknowledge your letter No.270
of February 28th., 1898, and to inform you that I have transmitted

its contents with a complete resume of the subject under discussion
to our Ambassador at London.
Though the incident is closed as between this Con-
-sulate and the Colonial Government I, however, beg to point out
that in my letter No.8 (February 19th. 1898) I did not question
the right of jurisdiction of British Courts in cases such as
cited. It would appear from the first paragraph of your letter
No.270 that you had understood me so to do.
I said that the subject was one of comity and good
will rather than one of law and I simply wished to be informed
whether the Colonial Government waived its right or not.
I consider paragraph two of your letter No.270 to
mean that you do not.
In the same paragraph I find "he (H. E.) is unable
to adppt your view &c."
